MOBI Files and Kindle: What Changed

If you're trying to send a MOBI file to your Kindle, you've hit a wall. Amazon stopped accepting MOBI files via Send to Kindle in late 2023. The format is dead. The good news: converting your MOBI library to EPUB is easy, and DropKind can send those EPUBs to your Kindle wirelessly.

Why Amazon killed MOBI

MOBI was the standard ebook format for Kindle for over a decade. It worked, but it was old — poor CSS support, no embedded fonts, limited layout options. Amazon added native EPUB support in 2022, then stopped accepting MOBI files entirely in late 2023. AZW3, Amazon's proprietary format, is also being phased out. EPUB is now the only ebook format that makes sense for Kindle.

How to convert your MOBI library

Calibre is the go-to tool for ebook management and conversion. It's free, open source, and runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. To convert: open Calibre, add your MOBI files, select them, click "Convert books," and choose EPUB as the output format. For a full library, select all and use "Bulk convert." The converted EPUBs will generally look better on Kindle than the original MOBIs ever did. Once you have EPUBs, send them to your Kindle with DropKind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still send MOBI files to Kindle at all?

No. Amazon completely stopped accepting MOBI files via Send to Kindle in late 2023. You can still sideload MOBI files via USB cable on older Kindle models, but wireless delivery requires EPUB. DropKind does not accept MOBI files either — convert to EPUB first.

What about AZW3 files?

AZW3 is Amazon's proprietary format and is also being phased out in favor of EPUB. If you have AZW3 files, Calibre can convert those to EPUB as well. For new books, EPUB is the way forward.

Will my converted EPUBs look as good as the original MOBIs?

Usually better. EPUB supports modern typography, embedded fonts, and improved image handling. Books that looked mediocre as MOBI files often look noticeably better as EPUB on Kindle.
