Kindle Paperwhite: a footnote from chapter I of The Captain's Daughter, open over the page

Looking for an FB2 to MOBI or AZW3 converter?

You don't need either. That advice dates from when books went onto a Kindle over a cable. Today a Kindle takes EPUB: DropKind makes one from your FB2 and delivers the book to your Kindle for you. No software, no cable.

  1. FB2 your book
  2. DropKind makes an EPUB
  3. Kindle in your library

What the conversion keeps

The demonstration book's cover on a Kindle
The book's own cover gets a page of its own, as wide as the screen.
The book's table of contents in the Kindle menu: chapters I–IV
The table of contents follows the book's sections.
Kindle Paperwhite: a footnote from chapter I of The Captain's Daughter, open over the page
Footnotes open in a pop-up, as in books from the Kindle Store.

Poems and epigraphs keep their layout, old books in the windows-1251 encoding come out readable, and the series name and the book's number are shown at the start.

Every screenshot on this page is from a Kindle Paperwhite. The book is a demonstration copy of The Captain's Daughter (chapters I–IV, T. Keane's 1894 translation from Project Gutenberg), sent through DropKind.

Questions

Does Kindle support FB2?
No. Neither Kindle devices nor Amazon's Send to Kindle accept FB2 files. The book has to become an EPUB first; DropKind does that and sends the result.
Do I need to convert FB2 to MOBI or AZW3?
No. MOBI and AZW3 are only for copying a book to a Kindle over a cable. Send to Kindle doesn't take them: it needs EPUB. DropKind makes the EPUB and sends it to your Kindle itself.
Do I need Calibre?
No. There is nothing to install: the conversion runs on our server, and you only upload the file.
Can I upload a zipped book?
Yes: .fb2.zip and .fbz files, with one book in each archive.
Is it free?
An FB2 book counts as one delivery. The free plan includes 20 deliveries a month.
Is there a size limit?
The FB2 file can be up to 50 MB. A book with many large pictures can come out too big for email delivery; then you see a message saying so.
