Papers older than the HTML. arXiv goes back to 1991; its HTML only to December 2023. Ar5iv rebuilds much of the gap from LaTeX, and what it misses is read off the PDF by a model. That path costs credits by the page, and you see the price first.

Is it free?

Any paper with an arXiv HTML version is free, on every plan, with or without an account. A paper without HTML needs OCR of the PDF, which costs PDF credits — you see the price before anything runs.

Which papers have an HTML version?

arXiv publishes HTML for papers submitted since December 2023, and ar5iv covers many earlier ones by building HTML from the same LaTeX source. A paper that has neither falls back to OCR.

What happens to the equations?

They are carried across as MathML, so the maths stays text rather than a picture of maths. How much of it a given Kindle renders depends on the device and its typesetting engine, and we are still testing across devices. Heavy notation may come through simplified.

Which Kindle does this work on?

Any Kindle that receives personal documents — from the basic Kindle to the Paperwhite and the Scribe — and the Kindle apps on phones and tablets. The EPUB arrives like any other book, so the text reflows and the font size is yours to change.

Why not email the PDF to my Kindle?

You can, and it arrives. But a PDF is a layout built for a sheet of paper: the page size is fixed, so on a Kindle screen it can only get smaller. We rebuild the paper as a Kindle book instead — the text fits whatever screen you read it on, at the size you choose.

How many papers can I convert?

Three a month without an account. After you connect your Kindle, your monthly paper limit matches your delivery plan — 20 on Free, 100 on Plus, and 300 on Pro. PDF-only papers use credits instead.
